Contract for the well
At the end of 2025 Szczecin signed a contract to drill the Szczecin GT-2 geothermal test well. As the Polish Geothermal Association reported, citing media accounts from early December 2025, the contractor for the borehole is the company UOS Drilling S.A. The project is to check whether thermal waters can feed the city district heating network and increase the city's energy self-sufficiency and the diversity of its heat sources.
Parameters and location
The well is to be sunk on a plot in the area of Dąbska street, close to the municipal heating plant. Its target depth is around 1950 metres. The expectation is to obtain thermal water at a temperature of about 70-75 degrees Celsius and a yield in the order of 200 cubic metres per hour.
According to the association, estimates suggest geothermal energy could cover roughly 15 per cent of Szczecin's heat demand, and up to 20 per cent in an optimistic variant.
Cost and supervision
The value of the investment was put at over 15 million zloty, roughly 15.1 million. Geological supervision and preparation of the hydrogeological documentation were entrusted to the firm Multiconsult Polska. The project has a grant from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management of 12.9 million zloty.
Context
Szczecin GT-2 is an exploration well, meaning one whose job is to identify geological conditions and confirm the resource before any decision on building an installation is made. At this stage the temperature and yield of the thermal waters in the area are assumed figures, not measured ones. Only after the geological and hydrogeological surveys can the possible scale of using heat from beneath the city be discussed.
